HELP
The Monkey Lounge's format is based on a text command-driven multi-user environment, aka a 'talker,' 'chat,' or 'social mud' writen in 1995. You may notice that it does not operate like the currently popular Instant Messaging programs, and this page is intended to give a newbie answers to commonly asked questions.

Logging In
When you click the 'Chat Now' buttons or links to enter the Monkey Lounge chat room, you are first asked to type in your name. At this point, one of two things may happen:
  1. If your name exists, you will be prompted for your password. Enter it and skip down to step the section describing the Main Menu.
  2. If you mistype your password, you will be asked to re-enter it up to two more times. A third failure will disconnect you from the system.

Joining the Monkey Lounge
If you are new to Monkey Lounge, its possible your first (or second) name choice may already be taken. Try to choose a name that's unique to you. There are five steps to creating a character:
  1. When you find a unique name, you will be asked if you spelled your name correctly.
  2. Type 'Y' for yes, and you will be prompted to create a new character.
  3. You will then be asked for a password, and to re-enter it so that you remember how it was spelled. Passwords must be a minimum of 3 characters and cannot be spelled the same as your character name.
  4. You will then be asked for a gender. Choose 'M' for male or 'F' for female and hit your 'Enter/Return' key.
  5. At this point, you are shown a brief help screen. Again hit 'Enter/Return' on your keyboard and go to the main menu.

At the menu, your choices are fairly simple. Type '1' to enter the conversation. Type '2' to give your character a visual description. You can use this space to describe your looks, list a favorite quote, or link to a homepage. Type '4' to change your password. Type '5' to delete your character.

Content/Behavior Guidelines
The Monkey Lounge is a place to meet, interact, and share ideas with each other. Just like a real community, you may have different opinions than others in the conversation. The experience is best for everyone if you follow a few key rules:
  1. Do not harass, abuse, or threaten other members.
  2. Do not post content that is obscene or otherwise objectionable.
  3. Do not attempt to use The Monkey Lounge for commercial or advertising purposes.
  4. Don't post copyrighted content without permission from the owner.
Postings or behavior that violate these guidelines, may lead to the deletion of posts, to the freezing, banning or lockout of a character.

The JAVA Chat
The JAVA Chat is a page where people (who may not be familiar with TELNET, or have their computers correctly configured for it) may go to access Monkey Lounge from within the website. There are a few important issues to pay attention to:
  • The Monkey Lounge JAVA Telnet client has been tested on and is compatible with *only* JAVA-enabled Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and up.

  • Some browsers may appear to 'freeze' or stop working when you first open the page. Please be patient and give us a chance to load all of the files you'll need to start chatting.

  • The Monkey Lounge probably will not work if you are behind a corporate firewall.

  • You may need to click directly on or roll your mouse over the chat window to activate the Monkey Lounge and get it to recognize your typing.

WebTV
Unfortunately, Monkey Lounge does not work on WebTV.

Getting Help
The most important thing you need to know is how to talk. After you're logged in, type 'say' followed by what you want to say. Here's what it should look like:

>say hi
You say, 'hi'

Once you figure out how to do it, you can learn the rest from one of the friendly people chatting in the main room.
